Luella

Luella arched her back and pulled her legs close in a stretch that felt oh-so good. Whatever bed she was on, however, did not feel good. Where had she dozed off at? This wasn’t their comfy cottage mattress. Her fingers searched around, feeling blankets and pillows swirled around her. Even the smell was different, like she had fallen asleep in a greenhouse. Dust tickled her nose.

She blinked her eyes open. No, this wasn’t their home at all. Panic clenched her throat and her heart quickened its rhythm in her chest. Moonlight streamed in through an opening in a wooden wall, lending its glow to this strange place. White curtains billowed around the opening. From her position on the floor, she could see a portion of the moon and an endless sea of stars around it in the dark sky. Silhouettes of trees and what she could only guess to be mountains blocked some of their light. Children’s toys tossed in a corner of the room caught her eye. Her skin crawled at the creepiness of the forgotten, aged toys. Where in heaven’s name was she?

She sprung up. “Kofi?” Her voice cracked in panic. Where was he? Had he left her? “AGH!” The most unattractive scream tore through her throat as something furry moved against her side. She flung her arms out in sheer terror and sent whatever it was flying over the sheets and sliding across the wooden planks of flooring.

Yowling followed the black blob.

The wooden door creaked open and Luella’s heart went into full drumline mode until Vyrium’s head poked through the doorway. His eyes reflected the glow of the moonlight as he looked at her. “Luella? Is something wrong?”

“This black thing—” She pointed at the creature but her hand fell to her mouth to cover the gasp that escaped. Her cheeks heated at the sight of Skully clawing into the wooden planks to stop his spinning across the room. His fur stood straight and she could see his chest shaking from his own heart beating rapidly. “Oh, Skully! I’m so sorry!”

Vyrium’s snickers were quickly silenced by her glare. He cleared his throat as Skully yanked his claws out of the floor. “Well, seeing as how both of you are fine, how about calming down that heart of yours? And the blood rushing to your cheeks, too?”

Skully trotted back to her and sat on her lap. “My apologies, I didn’t mean to disturb you.”

His words were a lot nicer than the grumpiness exuding from him which she could feel through whatever connection they now shared.

She’d have to give him lots of pets to make up for this.

“No, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to fling you like that. You were being nice by keeping me warm and comfortable. I’m sorry, Skully.” She placed her hand over her heart and slowed her breathing while her other hand ran along his fur. The action soothed both of their nerves, but did nothing for Vyrium who shifted back and forth on his feet.

“I’ll be going then.
